Almshouses are a type of sheltered housing for those who are able to live independently – such as the recently retired over the age of 50 – and where the residents pay a “weekly maintenance contribution” similar to rent but usually less than the market rate – sometimes it is as little as £40 a week.
The following information is a guide to the almshouse application process for retired elderly people applying for almshouse charitable, free accommodation or low-cost retirement accommodation.
Almshouse usually operate a waiting list, however on receipt of your completed application form, the Almshouses Scheme managers will firstly check that the applicant(s) meets the criteria for accommodation. To be accepted on to the waiting list applicants must either:
Have been born in the area or
Be normally resident in the area (on the electoral roll etc.) or
Have been resident in the area for a period as set by the scheme
You must have a housing need or be experiencing some other form of hardship, and ? you are in urgent need of living within the area.
You must be capable of living independently, as no on-site care is provided.
You must be at least 50 years of age at the time a property is offered.
